(1) What can PVA do?

Polyvinyl alcohol is used as a transparent sizing material in a size press to impart surface strength and barrier properties. With this ability, it is usually used to improve the performance of starch. Polyvinyl alcohol excels in this function because it is stronger than other surface sizing agents and more resistant to oil, grease, wax and organic solvents

Colored surface sizing

Due to its excellent strength, the formulation amount of Polyvinyl alcohol can be lower than other binders, thereby optimizing the brightness and opacity of the pigment system.

Inkjet paper

For inkjet offset press coating formulations using silica pigments, Polyvinyl alcohol is the preferred binder. Its excellent bonding strength can control possible dusting of starch. Polyvinyl alcohol is a hydrophilic polymer that can work synergistically with silica pigments to quickly absorb the water-based ink into the coating, thereby minimizing wicking, spots and bleeding.

Fluorescent brightener carrier

Compared with starch, Polyvinyl alcohol can provide more than 2.0-2.5 UV brightness units (or on the contrary, reduce the content of expensive fluorescent dyes under the same brightness). This higher efficiency can reduce or eliminate fluorescent dyes on the wet end.

Grease resistant

Polyvinyl alcohol has excellent barrier properties against oils, greases, waxes and solvents. It can be used alone or together with starch. Polyvinyl alcohol is also a very effective carrier for fluorine-containing compounds. The blend of Polyvinyl alcohol and fluorine-containing compound can reach 3M kit grade, and its cost is much lower than the cost of using fluorine-containing compound alone.

Hydrophobicity

The surface application of the mixture of Polyvinyl alcohol and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) shows that the Cobb and Hercules sizing (HST) values of acid paper and alkali paper have been significantly improved, and there is almost no loss of size after aging. Unlike starch, surface application of Polyvinyl alcohol will not reduce the internal sizing effect of wet-end additives such as AKD or ASA.

Adhesive bonding

The excellent strength of Polyvinyl alcohol provides an effective means to achieve interlayer adhesion on multi-layer paperboard.

 

(3) The benefits of choosing PVA materials

On the coating machine, due to its excellent strength, coatings formulated with Polyvinyl alcohol can significantly reduce the total binder content.

This can save a lot of cost while significantly improving brightness, gloss and opacity. The water retention properties of Polyvinyl alcohol also reduce or zero the hydrocolloid content in the coating formulation. Unlike some natural adhesives, Polyvinyl alcohol does not need to use alkali such as ammonia to dissolve it.

Polyvinyl alcohol is the binder of choice for inkjet coatings using silica pigments. Compared with typical latex adhesives, it has excellent bonding strength and improved inkjet printing quality. Polyvinyl alcohol is a hydrophilic polymer that can work synergistically with silica pigments to quickly absorb the water-based ink into the coating, thereby minimizing wicking, spots and bleeding.

In addition, Polyvinyl alcohol is considered the best carrier for fluorescent dyes. Adding 0.5-2.0 parts (dry) Polyvinyl alcohol per 100 parts of pigment can add 4 units of brightness. Such improvement is of great significance to paper with high 80s/low 90s brightness. Polyvinyl alcohol also has excellent adhesive strength and good water retention properties, which can reduce the content of latex and hydrocolloids.
