What is PVA film?

What is PVA film?

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film is widely used in the packaging and production of polarizers. Polyvinyl alcohol film is a water-soluble biodegradable film that can facilitate the water-soluble small-dose packaging of detergents, water treatment chemicals, pesticides and dyes. Those small water-soluble dosages provide ease of use and avoid human contact with internal materials. In addition to packaging applications, Polyvinyl alcohol films are also used for laundry bags and embroidery applications, where the film is used as a water-soluble film.

Polarizers are another major application of Polyvinyl alcohol film, where the film contributes to the polarization properties. Polarizing film is made of PVA and TAC film as raw materials, and it is an indispensable component in liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.

This passage is going to talk about the followings of Polyvinyl alcohol:

(1) Chemical properties of Polyvinyl alcohol

(2) The use of Polyvinyl alcohol in various countries

(3) Precautions for handling Polyvinyl alcohol products

(1) Chemical properties of Polyvinyl alcohol

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film is widely used in the packaging and production of polarizers. Polyvinyl alcohol film is a water-soluble biodegradable film that can facilitate the water-soluble small-dose packaging of detergents, water treatment chemicals, pesticides and dyes. Those small water-soluble dosages provide ease of use and avoid human contact with internal materials. In addition to packaging applications, Polyvinyl alcohol films are also used for laundry bags and embroidery applications, where the film is used as a water-soluble film.

(2) The use of Polyvinyl alcohol in various countries

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film is a biodegradable water-soluble film that can be used for packaging detergents, agrochemicals, water treatment chemicals, disinfectants and dyes, laundry bag production, and embroidery. All these applications are related to the water solubility of the Polyvinyl alcohol film.

In North America, nearly 33% of Polyvinyl alcohol films are used for water-soluble applications. MonoSol LLC of the United States is the world's largest producer of PVA film and has a large share of the North American market. Western Europe's consumption is second only to North America, second only to North America, accounting for 24%. Both North America and Western Europe are mature markets, where PVA films can be used for all types of water-soluble applications. The Asia-Pacific region is an emerging market and has not yet appeared in a few applications such as detergent packaging. The Asia-Pacific region is the main producer of PVA film, and 60% of the film is exported to other regions.

South America and Eastern Europe seem to be the main importers of PVA film (mainly from China, Japan and India). Since these areas do not produce PVA films in large quantities, the consumption is mainly driven by imports. In South America, PVA film is mainly used for embroidery and pesticide packaging applications, while in Eastern European countries, it is mainly used for detergent packaging applications.

(3) Excellent performance of PVA film

PVA film has excellent characteristics such as environmental protection, solubility, weather resistance, barrier properties and printing properties, which makes it promising.

PVA film products are environmentally friendly materials. Relevant departments have measured that the biological oxygen consumption (BOD) of PVA is much smaller than that of starch. After 5 days of biodegradation of PVA products by Air Products, the measured BOD is less than 1% of the initial total BOD. Biological tests have proved that PVA is non-toxic.

The solvent of PVA is water, but its solubility in water is largely affected by the degree of polymerization, especially the degree of alcoholysis. When the degree of alcoholysis is below 88%, it is almost completely dissolved in water at room temperature at 20°C. As the degree of alcoholysis increases, the solubility drops significantly, and the completely alcoholysis PVA dissolves very little in water.

PVA film has good toughness, high tensile strength, and the tear resistance ranks first among all kinds of films. It has superior bidirectional tensile strength, good weather resistance and long service life.

PVA film has low affinity for highly hydrophobic plastics, and has good release (peeling) performance for various organic materials with low polarity.

The transparency and gloss of PVA film are better than other films.

The moisture permeability of PVA film is similar to that of cellophane. It is a kind of film with extremely high moisture permeability, which will not produce mist when packaging hot and wet items.

PVA film has excellent oxygen barrier properties under dry conditions, and its oxygen permeability coefficient is the lowest among various resin films. PVA film has strong permeability to moisture and ammonia, but has excellent barrier properties to oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, helium, argon, and carbon dioxide. The barrier rate to oxygen under normal pressure is about the usual poly 1000 times of vinyl film, 300 times of polypropylene film. The use of PVA film can keep the composition of the packaged product and its own odor intact.

Many plastic films are highly charged, while PVA films are almost non-static. In the process of packaging products with PVA film, static electricity will not cause its plasticity to decrease or electrostatic dust.

PVA film has excellent water color and ink printability. This is the incomparable advantage of existing plastic films that can only be printed with ink. It can be used for water transfer printing, such as: glass, ceramics, electrical enclosures, automobile parts and other irregular surfaces Color printing. At the same time, the PVA film has a strong polarity and can be used in special printing industries, such as water transfer film substrates, without electric spark processing during printing.
