What is ammonium chloride used for?

The subject of chemistry can be said to be a magical subject. I believe everyone must have learned about ammonium chloride in chemistry classes in junior high and high school.

In fact, ammonium chloride is a salt, a kind of strong acid and weak base salt, and its aqueous solution is acidic. The main purpose of ammonium chloride is as a by-product of the soda industry.

This passage is going to talk about the followings of ammonium chloride:

(1) Definition of ammonium chloride

(2) Broad uses of ammonium chloride

(3) Excellent performance of ammonium chloride

(1) Definition of ammonium chloride

Ammonium chloride, abbreviated as ammonium chloride, is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula NH4Cl, which refers to the ammonium salt of hydrochloric acid, mostly a by-product of the alkali industry. Nitrogen content is 24%~26%, it is white or slightly yellowish square or octahedral small crystals. There are two dosage forms of powdery and granular. Granular ammonium chloride is not easy to absorb moisture and is easy to store, while powdered ammonium chloride is mostly used The basic fertilizer for the production of compound fertilizer.

The aqueous solution is weakly acidic, and the acidity increases when heated. It is corrosive to ferrous metals and other metals, especially to copper, and has no corrosive effect on pig iron.

There are two main production processes for this product: one is to use the Hou's soda method invented by the famous Chinese scientist Hou Debang to produce both soda ash and ammonium chloride at the same time; the other is to produce by-products of potassium salt such as potassium carbonate. Ammonium chloride is easy to agglomerate, and anti-caking agents are usually added to prevent the product from agglomerating.

(2) Broad uses of ammonium chloride

1. Ammonium chloride can be used as a raw material to manufacture dry batteries and accumulators, other ammonium salts, electroplating additives, metal welding fluxes;

2. Ammonium chloride is used as a dyeing auxiliary, and also used in tinning and galvanizing, leather tanning, medicine, candle making, adhesives, chromizing, precision casting;

3. Used in medicine, dry batteries, textile printing and dyeing, and detergent;

4. Used as fertilizer for crops, suitable for rice, wheat, cotton, hemp, vegetables and other crops;

5. Used as analytical reagent, such as preparing ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer solution. Used as a supporting electrolyte in electrochemical analysis. Used as arc stabilizer for emission spectrum analysis, interference inhibitor for atomic absorption spectrum analysis, and inspection of synthetic fiber viscosity;

6. Medicinal ammonium chloride is used as an expectorant, diuretic, and expectorant;

7. Yeast nutrient (mainly used in beer brewing); dough regulator. Generally used after mixing with sodium bicarbonate, the dosage is about 25% of sodium bicarbonate, or 10-20g/kg of wheat flour. Mainly used in bread, biscuits, etc.

(3) Excellent performance of ammonium chloride

Have you heard that ammonium chloride can relieve phlegm and relieve cough?

① Ammonium chloride enters the body, and part of the ammonium ion is rapidly metabolized by the liver to form urea, which is excreted in the urine. Chloride ions combine with hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid, thereby correcting alkalosis.

② Due to the chemical irritation to the mucous membrane, the sputum volume is increased reflexively and the sputum is easy to be discharged, so it is conducive to the removal of a small amount of sputum that is not easy to cough up. After the product is absorbed, chloride ions enter the blood and extracellular fluid to acidify the urine.

Disable use with caution:

(1) It is forbidden for patients with liver and kidney dysfunction, and it should be used with caution when renal dysfunction is used to prevent hyperchloric acidosis.

(2) In patients with sickle cell anemia, it can cause hypoxia or (and) acidosis.

(3) Patients with ulcer disease and metabolic acidemia are contraindicated.

(4) Prohibited for pregnant and lactating women

(5) Children use under the guidance of a doctor
