Reactions similar to formaldehyde can occur, such as chloromethylation and the formation of acetals with alcohols. Used in synthetic resins, adhesives, medicines, fungicides, insecticides, disinfectants, etc.

Paraformaldehyde is mainly used in the production and use of herbicides. It is also used in the preparation of synthetic resins (such as artificial horn products or artificial ivory) and adhesives. Paraformaldehyde is also used in the pharmaceutical industry (the effective ingredient of contraceptive creams) and the disinfection of pharmacies, clothes and bedding. Paraformaldehyde, together with phenol, urea, melamine, resorcinol and other similar reagents, is used as a source of formaldehyde groups in the production of many thermosetting resins. These resins are used as molding powders. Used as glue for particleboard, plywood and furniture in the wood industry; used as a binder resin for brakes, abrasives and casting dyes; used as a facing resin for paper and textiles; used as a desiccant and polish for paint; Insulating paint for components.

Some typical formulations for producing this resin starting from paraformaldehyde include dichloroethyl formaldehyde, methyl phenol, disinfectants, insecticides, drugs such as vitamin A, preservatives, dyes and special plasticizers.

In addition, paraformaldehyde is also used as a fungicide and fungicide in industries such as formaldehyde production, beet sugar refining and storage.

Paraformaldehyde has been widely accepted as an additive to prevent starch fermentation in oil well drilling mud.
